Recording.

0:00

We should do a clap.

0:02

Okay.

0:03

So I'm supposed to be recording you but I have to check all the chords because I did

0:08

some moving around and I think I unplugged one of the chords.

0:11

Anyway.

0:12

Okay, so... Three, two, one, clap.

1:06

All righty.

1:07

For some reason I always clap and then I hear your clap come through afterwards.

1:11

Yeah, it's the opposite for me.

1:13

It's because there's like a delay on both sides.

1:17

It's because we're far away.

1:19

Far away, through the internet, above the hill and over the trees.

1:24

So far away, la la la la.

1:30

Do you like my song?

1:31

I do.

1:32

I feel warm and fuzzy inside.

1:36

Well, you're fucking better.

1:37

I wrote it for you.

1:39

Thank you.

1:40

I've never felt more alive.

1:43

Turned on.

1:46

Bonerific.

1:47

Oof.

1:48

Anyway, hello.

1:49

Hello, everybody.

1:49

Hello, internet.

1:52

Let's move away from the bonerific situation.

1:56

Yes.

1:57

Let's be not that.

1:59

Well, we have to always be bonerific, dude.

2:01

It's true.

2:02

And I mean, usually we are in our way of being.

2:10

And of having.

2:14

Having and being.

2:15

Being and having.

2:17

That's the way.

2:19

Uh-huh.

2:19

Uh-huh.

2:19

I like it.

2:20

Uh-huh.

2:21

Uh-huh.

2:22

I like it.

2:25

Anyway, today is the first time we've gotten on in a while.

2:28

Right, Brandon?

2:29

This is true.

2:31

We've been busy, and I went on an extended honeymoon.

2:38

And now I will tell you the exciting conclusion.

2:41

Okay.

2:42

Tell us your story.

2:43

Okay.

2:43

So...

2:45

Sigh.

2:46

My wife and I...

2:48

...land in Portugal.

2:50

And we are... so we're in Lisbon.

2:53

We're supposed to spend the night in Lisbon, and then fly the next morning to

2:58

the Azores, to an island where a friend of mine has a home.

3:04

And so his family had invited us to stay there for three or four days, and that was

3:10

the end of our three weeks of honeymoon.

3:13

So we're supposed to fly there, stay there for a few days, and then fly

3:18

home to Canada.

3:21

Okay.

3:22

So we get an Uber to take us from our hotel to the airport.

3:27

And all over the airport, there's signs that say, like, Use Uber.

3:31

It's good.

3:33

You get a discount.

3:35

Blah, blah, blah.

3:36

Whatever it says.

3:39

And...

3:41

My wife gets in the back seat, and I get in the front seat and push the

3:47

seat back, because...

3:49

And all the way up into that point, I'd mostly been getting in the back,

3:53

because it made me feel fancy, right?

3:56

Like, you're both sitting in the back, and there's a driver, and it makes you

3:59

feel fancy.

4:01

Right.

4:01

But I sit in the front, because we're, like, on a busy street, and the driver's

4:06

side, there's a bunch of traffic.

4:08

So I'm like, well, I'll just get in the passenger side to, like, let us get there

4:15

faster.

4:15

We weren't late or anything.

4:17

We just...

4:18

I just thought we'd get there faster.

4:20

But the seat was pushed all the way forward, so I pushed the seat back,

4:25

and, like, Michelle's in the back, like, putting her stuff down, and we get

4:29

our suitcases in the car, and we're going to the airport.

4:34

And we, like, the parking lot at the airport was super busy, so we're,

4:40

like, trying to navigate everything, get our bags out, everything else.

4:45

We roll up to the gate to check our bags in, and we're, like, a few hours before

4:51

the flight.

4:53

So we're, like, good to go and everything.

4:55

And Michelle reaches down to grab her passport, and she's like, where's my

5:02

purse?

5:03

And I'm like...

5:04

Oh, no.

5:05

What do you...

5:06

What do you mean?

5:07

Like, you had it on you, like, until we got to the car.

5:13

She's like, yes.

5:15

And I was like, I think you left.

5:17

I think you left it in the Uber.

5:18

And we were, like, two or three minutes from having seen the car.

5:23

And the airport was really busy.

5:25

So I'm thinking, like, maybe the driver hasn't even left the parking lot.

5:29

Because he had told us as we were driving in, like, he gets backed up, he gets

5:34

really busy, sometimes he has to sit in traffic.

5:39

So I keep all of our luggage.

5:42

She runs out to the parking lot to see if she can find this guy.

5:46

Okay.

5:47

She remembered, like, half of his license plate and the type of car that it was.

5:52

So she runs out there, and she's, like, looking, not finding anything.

5:58

Oh, dude, I'd be freaking out.

6:00

So, well, like, all of her ID was in her purse.

6:05

Yeah.

6:06

Some of our money, like, 50 bucks was in her purse.

6:10

Everything else was in our two backpacks.

6:13

And we had those on us.

6:15

So, yeah.

6:17

We didn't have a lot of cash, but, like, I had all my ID and everything.

6:21

And my wallet, she didn't have her purse.

6:27

So, we go into, we sit down at a table, we go into the Uber app, we tell the

6:33

ticketing agents, she's lost her purse, we're gonna, like, get her a passport,

6:40

we're gonna figure out something.

6:42

In the meantime, they're like, okay, we'll mark it down, so, like,

6:46

we're not...

6:47

We're not calling you to get on the flight.

6:49

You're not checked in.

6:50

If you find it, come back and we'll try to put you on the flight or the one that's

6:56

later this afternoon.

6:58

So, we're like, okay.

6:59

So, we sit down and she's, obviously, she's upset.

7:04

She thinks she's, like, ruined everything.

7:06

And I'm like, no, like, we're gonna work together.

7:08

We're gonna figure this out.

7:10

Like, so, I have her, like, tell me a list of everything she had in her purse just to

7:14

keep her mind, like, working.

7:17

She calls Uber, she talks to the guy, tells him, like, he's like, oh,

7:25

you must have, like, dropped it, it's not here.

7:28

And she's like, it's a black purse, it was under the seat, my husband pushed

7:32

the seat back, double plus on our side, we had an air tag in her purse.

7:39

And we're seeing the air tag move around.

7:43

Okay.

7:44

Okay.

7:44

We know that the purse...

7:47

The purse is, like, in a car.

7:49

And it's near the airport, because we can see it moving.

7:52

Oh, my God, that's so good that you had the air tag in there.

7:55

So, like, thank God.

7:57

So, she says to him, like, no, we can see it, it's moving with you.

8:05

Like, we know you're on the road to the airport, like, leaving the airport.

8:11

Could you please, like, we'll give you a cash reward.

8:14

Could you do anything?

8:15

Could you please come back?

8:17

Blah, blah, blah.

8:18

He says no.

8:20

And then, because...

8:21

So, the way it works is you have to contact the driver through the app.

8:25

You can't contact them directly.

8:28

Right.

8:29

Why would he say no, though?

8:30

That's so stupid.

8:31

So, he then blocks us in the app from making any more phone calls.

8:36

Wow.

8:37

He says that we're harassing him.

8:39

Holy crap, that's ridiculous.

8:42

So, Michelle is freaking out.

8:45

So, we contact, like, Uber customer support, who we're already talking to.

8:50

They tell us they can't do anything within 24 hours.

8:55

And that the driver has, like, we're not allowed to contact him again for

9:01

24 hours.

9:02

Right.

9:04

So, I'm like, if he's not giving it back, maybe, like, he's being honest.

9:12

Maybe he doesn't see it.

9:13

Maybe, like, he'll get to the end of his route.

9:15

And then he'll be like, oh, like, it's here.

9:18

Like, I should call that woman back.

9:20

Yeah.

9:21

Right?

9:22

Or maybe he's just going to steal it because he thinks he can, like,

9:26

take our $50 and Michelle's fake jewelry.

9:30

Like, I don't know what to tell you.

9:33

There wasn't much in it.

9:35

Like, her credit cards were the most valuable thing.

9:41

So, we're like, well, like, we can't get on the plane because she doesn't have a...

9:45

She doesn't have a passport.

9:46

She doesn't have any ID.

9:49

So, we have to, like, if we can't get the purse back, we have to go to the Canadian

9:54

consulate in Lisbon and get her another passport.

9:59

So, there's a police station in the airport.

10:01

One of the...

10:02

There's a police officer outside that tells us, like, go.

10:07

There's, like, a station.

10:09

Maybe they can help you.

10:10

So, we go.

10:11

They're like, we can't help you.

10:13

Like, it's...

10:14

We're showing him on the map.

10:15

We're, like, we can see him.

10:17

His name's Carlos.

10:18

This is the kind of car he has.

10:20

This is his license plate.

10:21

He's like, we can't help you.

10:23

It's between you and Uber.

10:25

Like, there's 7 million people in this city.

10:28

What do you want us to do?

10:30

Holy cow.

10:32

So, we're like, okay, we'll go to the Canadian consulate because we're like,

10:35

what else can we do?

10:37

So, we take, like, a real taxi from the airport to the consulate.

10:43

The taxi driver is like, never take a taxi.

10:45

Uber.

10:45

It's full of, like, immigrants.

10:47

They're, like, robbers.

10:49

They're bad.

10:50

They were like, take you.

10:52

He kept saying, like, no good.

10:55

Only take taxi.

10:56

Only taxi.

10:58

And so, we're like, yeah, we're never taking an Uber again, obviously.

11:04

And he was explaining to us, as he's, like, speeding to the consulate,

11:08

because Michelle's crying.

11:09

He feels so bad.

11:12

He is telling us, like, So, like, if you want to be a taxi driver,

11:16

it's, like, a special license.

11:18

It's, like, a multi-month driver's course that you have to take.

11:23

Yeah.

11:23

It's, like, all these written tests.

11:25

And you get, like, a special license at the end.

11:29

But what Uber drivers are doing is, a lot of times, one person will take the

11:36

course and get, it's, like, a one- or two -day course in Portugal.

11:41

They'll get the special license.

11:43

And then, like...

11:45

Three or four people will share the car and the license.

11:49

Because they look alike.

11:51

Right.

11:52

So, like, someone will, like, own the car.

11:56

And then someone finds these, like, illegal workers to, like, work in the same

12:02

Uber account.

12:03

That's so fucked.

12:04

Right?

12:06

So, we get to the consulate.

12:08

And they're, like...

12:09

The police were not helpful.

12:11

But they were super helpful.

12:13

They were, like, okay.

12:14

So, the cops won't help you.

12:16

But, like, we're gonna get in touch with, like, the Canadian government and the

12:23

diplomat.

12:25

The woman was, like, she was, like, honestly, we can't do anything for at

12:30

least 72 hours.

12:32

And especially with the time change.

12:34

Because at this point, it's, like, 2 a.m.

12:37

in Canada.

12:38

She's, like, we can't do anything until tomorrow morning.

12:43

Because...

12:44

It's, like, it's already too late in the night.

12:48

And we can't get a hold of anyone until at least tomorrow.

12:52

So, she's, like, we can definitely get you a passport.

12:58

Like, you're gonna have to at least spend three days in Lisbon until we can get you

13:03

a passport.

13:04

And they, like, they made sure, like, I still had my credit card.

13:08

So, like, we could get money if we needed it.

13:12

We still had a little bit of cash.

13:14

So, we were okay there.

13:16

They gave us all the forms.

13:18

They said, like, go get your passport pictures.

13:21

Here's, like, a place to go.

13:23

Here's where you can get train passes.

13:26

Do you have a place to stay for your hotel?

13:28

They took all our information so that they could help us.

13:32

And Michelle, luckily, she had had her phone on her.

13:36

And when we landed in France, we had got her, like, a local, like, an EU SIM card.

13:44

Right.

13:45

So, she had a local phone number that they could call if anything came up.

13:52

So, they gave us the paperwork.

13:54

We leave.

13:56

We go to where it's like a metro station, like a subway station, where they have the

14:03

passport, the photo place.

14:06

So, we go get our pictures.

14:07

We start filling out the forms.

14:09

They made an appointment for us to come back the next day.

14:13

Okay.

14:14

And, like, do the passport if we couldn't find it or get it back from the Uber

14:19

driver.

14:20

Right.

14:21

So, we start filling out the forms.

14:23

We do that.

14:23

I book us.

14:25

I get us bus passes and subway passes for the next few days.

14:29

We book the same hotel for three nights so that we have a place to stay.

14:35

Because we can't go anywhere until Michelle has a passport, right?

14:41

We, like, eventually...

14:44

We go back to the hotel, Michelle, like, calls her parents, uh, cancels her

14:49

credit cards, puts a hold on her debit card, like, makes sure, like, everything

14:55

gets, like, said as lost or stolen.

15:00

The only thing we didn't do is mark her passport stolen.

15:03

Because the, the consul, the lady at the consulate said, if we report it as stolen,

15:09

it's now invalid.

15:11

So, if, like, if you're able to get it back...

15:15

Before tomorrow...

15:16

Right, because you need it still, so you can't do that.

15:19

So, she, she, like, we needed the number to, like, book a hotel.

15:23

Oh, man.

15:24

So, luckily, the hotel we stayed at the night before had it on file.

15:29

And they were like, it's fine, like, we'll, we'll, like, we'll still

15:33

honor it.

15:34

And we'll just put it on your husband's name.

15:38

Like, so that was fine.

15:42

So, she's like...

15:44

Once you get it back, I want you to be able to use it, like, like, let's wait

15:48

till tomorrow, kind of thing.

15:50

And honestly, she was just trying to, like, calm Michelle down, which was really

15:54

nice and helpful.

15:56

So, she was like, this happens all the time, like, we'll make sure you get home.

16:01

Like, that's not a concern.

16:03

Don't worry about that.

16:05

So, it's, like, six o'clock at night.

16:09

Michelle's like, the hair tag, she, we've been tracking it on her phones

16:13

all day.

16:14

She's like, it stopped moving, hasn't moved since 3.30.

16:18

I think, like, it's there, my purse is there.

16:21

So, I'm like, all right.

16:23

If, like, I look up the bus schedule in Google Maps.

16:26

If you want to go, it's a 20-minute bus ride.

16:30

If we go now, we can get there, have 45 minutes to look, and still have

16:36

enough time to get the last bus back to our hotel for the night.

16:42

She's like, I want to go, I want to go.

16:44

Right.

16:45

So, we take a bus.

16:47

We're literally, like, we're going out of the city.

16:51

People are looking at us like, like, what are you doing?

16:56

Why is she crying?

16:58

Like, it was, it was emotional.

17:01

Well, yeah, because no one else obviously understands what's going on.

17:04

Right.

17:04

And you guys are like, are we going to have to, like, get stuck here?

17:08

We don't speak Portuguese.

17:09

We're like, anyway.

17:13

So, we...

17:14

We go to where it is.

17:16

There's a highway, and then a hill up, and then a little street, and some,

17:22

like, businesses.

17:24

But it's, like, very industrial.

17:26

There's, like, old, like, you could tell, like, they used to be factories,

17:31

but they're closed down.

17:32

Right.

17:33

So, we go to this, like, dirt parking lot, and there's just, like, brush everywhere.

17:39

And we're walking up and down with our phones, like, trying to, like,

17:42

find the airtight.

17:44

And every once in a while, it's, like, the object is near you, or,

17:49

like, faint signal on our phones.

17:52

So, like, walking around, we're like, it's got to be here.

17:57

And in my head, I'm, like, trying to hold out hope for Michelle's sake, but I'm,

18:01

like, the guy, like, threw the airtight out of his car and, like, took the purse.

18:07

Right?

18:08

Yeah.

18:08

Yeah.

18:09

If he wanted the purse, and he thought it was valuable.

18:14

That's what he took.

18:15

So, there's this...

18:16

That's what logic would dictate, anyway.

18:19

And I'm always, like, thinking the worst -case scenario, right?

18:23

So, there's this store across the street.

18:25

It's, like, a hardware store.

18:26

They sell, like, lights and, like, stuff to put lights in your house.

18:32

And we go in, and there's a woman at the counter.

18:35

And Michelle's, like, do you speak English?

18:38

And she's, like, a little.

18:39

And Michelle starts telling the story, and she's, like, sorry, no.

18:43

Like...

18:44

I don't speak English.

18:45

But Michelle put, like, explained what had happened to us on her phone, translated

18:50

it, and wrote it in the Notes app on her phone.

18:54

So, she gives her the Notes app.

18:56

The woman reads it, and she's, like, oh.

18:59

She goes and gets her husband.

19:01

Gets her husband to read it, and is, like, okay.

19:05

So, he, like, goes into the parking lot, and he's, like, this is our car.

19:10

This is the neighbor's car who lives upstairs.

19:14

And there's, like, another, like, car that clearly was on fire at one point

19:18

at the side of the parking lot, like, busted out windows, everything.

19:22

He's, like, there was another car here earlier, but we didn't know whose it was.

19:29

So, we're, like, looking, and he's, like, our cars have been here all day.

19:33

They're locked up.

19:35

Like, we haven't seen anybody suspicious.

19:38

But, like, we'll help you look for the purse.

19:42

So, he helps us look.

19:43

Look, we're not finding anything.

19:44

He's, like, there's a police station down the road.

19:47

Maybe they can help us.

19:49

Or, like, at least you could report it as missing.

19:53

So, we start walking, and his wife comes out, and she's, like, no, no, no.

19:58

Like, yelling at her husband, like, you drive them.

20:02

So, he drives us down to the police station in his car.

20:06

Michelle's so paranoid.

20:09

She's, like, what if he stole the purse?

20:11

And he's now, like...

20:13

Gonna kill us.

20:14

I'm, like, Michelle, like, calm down.

20:20

Jesus.

20:20

This is such an endeavor that you guys went through.

20:24

It's, like, 6.30 at night at this point.

20:26

We had gotten to the airport at 11.

20:28

So, this started at, like, 11.30.

20:31

It's now 6 o'clock in the evening.

20:35

We're still looking for this purse.

20:38

The police are, like, alright.

20:39

Like, the best we can tell you is keep looking.

20:43

If you can't find it, like, here's the address and the location of the

20:47

headquarters.

20:49

Go there and, like, do a formal report.

20:52

And at least, like, you'll have it on paper.

20:55

But, like, that's the best we can do for you right now.

20:59

So, we go back to this side of the highway and we're, like, total crime scene

21:04

investigator mode.

21:06

Like, CSI.

21:08

I'm, like, alright.

21:09

If he was driving a car and the car was going 50 kilometers, an hour, he was,

21:15

like, an able-bodied man, but he threw it out at the passenger side.

21:19

Like, you couldn't have thrown it that far if he threw your purse.

21:22

How many, like, feet?

21:24

How many, like, you know, how many meters do you think it could have gotten?

21:28

And we're, like, walking through the brush.

21:32

And at this point, the husband, the store owner, is helping us look.

21:39

And he is, like, I don't know, like, he's looking in the parking lot.

21:43

We're looking further down the road where the highway is.

21:48

He starts whistling.

21:50

And there's something up in his hand.

21:53

Like, for, like, like, motioning for us to come to the parking lot, back to where

22:00

he's standing.

22:01

Michelle is, like, crying.

22:03

She's, like, is that my purse?

22:05

Is that my purse?

22:06

Sprinting up this hill.

22:10

We get, we would later learn his name was Paul.

22:14

Paul has her purse in his hand.

22:18

He found it on the side of the highway behind this, like, broken down car.

22:26

And, like, all her stuff is just scattered in the weeds.

22:30

Her entire purse was there.

22:32

So they obviously threw it out of the window or something.

22:35

Like, or, like, he stopped on his brake or he threw it out from the highway.

22:40

I think he, like, stopped the car, searched the purse, threw the purse,

22:44

and drove away.

22:45

Because he was worried about you guys tracking him.

22:48

Right.

22:48

Or he just, like, took the money and he took, she had some, like, earrings and

22:54

some, because she didn't take her real wedding rings.

22:58

She took, she bought fake ones on Amazon.

23:01

Oh, so that you didn't have, like, the really expensive stuff while you guys

23:04

were on vacation.

23:05

That makes a lot of sense.

23:06

We both got, like, $15, $10 rings off Amazon and wore those instead of...

23:12

And Michelle had them in her purse that morning.

23:15

She was like, I was going to put them on when we got to the airport.

23:19

So he took her jewelry that was worth all of 20 bucks and 50 euros.

23:26

Right.

23:27

And threw the rest and, like, her wallet, everything was there.

23:33

So we put everything back in the purse and Paul, Paulo, is like, I close up my store

23:41

at, like, 7.

23:43

I have, like, a few calls.

23:45

If you guys are willing to, like, stay for half an hour, we'll take you back

23:50

to our hotel.

23:51

Like, we feel really bad.

23:52

Like, and we're just happy we could help.

23:55

We want to show you they're, like, good people in Lisbon.

24:01

So they, like, let us sit in their store.

24:04

They give us water.

24:05

They start telling us about, like, don't trust Uber.

24:09

It's terrible.

24:10

They were the nicest people.

24:12

They, like, tell us, like, we're sorry you didn't like Lisbon, but, like,

24:17

please, like, here's the best places to see.

24:21

And we, like, took each other's email addresses and we need to, like,

24:26

send them flowers or, like, something to say thank you because they were just the

24:32

sweetest, nicest people.

24:34

That's such a wild story, though.

24:36

Like, and we found everything.

24:38

That's what I mean.

24:39

Like, it's absolutely insane.

24:41

So we ended up, we couldn't get any flights to the Hazors like, in time for us

24:50

to fly home.

24:52

So we ended up canceling our flight home and just booking an earlier flight.

24:57

We got, like, not all of our money back, but most of it.

25:02

And just booked a new flight straight from Lisbon to come home early because Michelle

25:09

was pretty done with her.

25:10

Yeah.

25:11

I mean, for good reason.

25:14

Like, holy cow.

25:16

Like, I was in shock that we found her purse.

25:19

Like, I could not believe it.

25:22

I mean, like, what are the odds?

25:24

You guys got so lucky.

25:26

I thought for sure he, like, threw the air tag.

25:29

Or, like, we'd find the purse, but her wallet would be missing.

25:34

Well, like, almost certainly, right?

25:35

You guys are, like, one in a million that you actually found that.

25:40

Well, and, like, like, the way air tags work is they have to ping off of,

25:47

like, an iPhone.

25:47

So an iPhone had to be close enough for long enough to register.

25:53

Yeah, that's crazy.

25:54

And, like, we had to go within, like, with how many...

26:00

We had to be within, like, 10 feet of the thing for it to actually, like,

26:05

register on our phones.

26:06

And the battery had to be strong enough so, like, yeah, we got so lucky.

26:13

And so lucky they were willing to help us.

26:16

Like, we would have been searching for hours.

26:18

And who knows if we would have actually been able to find it.

26:22

Like, I don't know.

26:24

Yeah, that's just... I can't believe it.

26:27

What a crazy fucking story.

26:29

Thank you.

26:30

That's insane that that happened to you.

26:32

Thank you, Polygra, for helping us.

26:36

But even just, like, for them having the patience to, like, you know, try and

26:41

figure out what you guys were trying to say and, like, help you guys.

26:43

Like, that they're genuinely good people, obviously.

26:46

They were just the kindest people.

26:48

And, like, she, at one point, Carla was on the phone and she calls her son and is,

26:54

like, telling her son.

26:55

She's like, they're from Canada.

26:57

This happened.

26:58

Like, it was just crazy.

27:02

Wow.

27:03

That's insane.

27:05

So, Michelle's like, I'm never taking an Uber again.

27:10

Never again.

27:13

So, that's my story.

27:14

That's a pretty good story, man.

27:16

I'm glad that I got to, like, get it out.

27:18

I mean, like, it's insane.

27:21

How many people have you told about this so far?

27:23

Thank you for listening.

27:25

Of course.

27:25

To my TED Talk.

27:29

Like, we told our parents.

27:31

We told a few friends.

27:33

Michelle has a friend who had her purse stolen.

27:40

Um, at one point.

27:42

So, we had...

27:44

So, I actually also had, like, a little sling and we got the kind of,

27:48

like, you couldn't cut as, like, metal in the strap because we had heard

27:53

these stories about people getting their stuff stolen.

27:56

And even when we were in Greece, our tour guide said, always put it to,

28:02

like, the front of your body.

28:03

Make sure, like, the strap is tight across your chest because, like, people...

28:08

and keep the zippers, like, on the side closest to you because people will,

28:14

like, snatch and grab.

28:15

It's a big issue in busy streets, like, in the downtown area.

28:22

And it's all very touristy.

28:26

Wow.

28:26

That's, like, mind-blowing, though, that you were able to actually get to this

28:29

place and meet these people.

28:31

They helped you and you found it and you, like, it didn't, like...

28:34

Yeah.

28:35

Like, that's... that is crazy to me.

28:38

And they helped us find it and, like...

28:41

Well, yeah, that's what I mean.

28:42

Like, they had the decency to, like, help you find it.

28:47

That's...

28:47

that's even more crazy, right?

28:49

Because that doesn't... like, the fact that you even met them and they wanted to

28:52

help you in the first place is insane.

28:55

Wow.

28:56

Congratulations on your finding everything and getting home safely.

29:01

Thank you for not getting abducted and dying.

29:04

I am... yes.

29:05

Much appreciated.

29:07

At one point, we're in the...

29:08

car with the...

29:10

with Paul and the, like, seatbelt thing starts dinging.

29:17

And Michelle's like, is that my purse?

29:21

I'm like, no, put your seatbelt on.

29:23

But we were just so worked up, like...

29:26

Well, for good reason, though.

29:28

Like, that's a really stressful situation that you guys went through.

29:31

And you survived it and you are stronger for it.

29:34

I am... honestly, I am...

29:36

I am very...

29:38

in a way, like, I'm like, we got through it together.

29:42

So, that was the good that came out of it.

29:47

Right.

29:48

Yeah.

29:48

That's bonkers, man.

29:51

Anyway.

29:51

Thanks for not getting abducted and dying through all that while you were gone.

29:56

You're welcome.

30:01

I don't want you to die, Brendan.

30:04

I love you so much.

30:06

Yes, I...

30:07

I don't want to die, either.

30:09

Good.

30:10

I know I will one day, but hopefully not today.

30:14

Well, yeah.

30:14

Definitely not today.

30:16

Anyway, I want to hear about your things.

30:22

About my time?

30:23

After my half-hour soliloquy.

30:25

Well, anyway, that was a good story, though.

30:27

It's very entertaining.

30:29

So, people...

30:30

It kept me on the edge of my seat while I was listening to it.

30:33

So, I don't have as many crazy things to report, but...

30:37

The one thing I do have to report that's, like, a big deal in my life is I hit a

30:43

milestone with work recently, where I have a published work of animation that I

30:50

supervised the animation on.

30:52

And it was through Pixar and Lego.

30:56

So, those are, like, two of the biggest companies you could possibly work for.

30:59

And I now officially have published works on Disney+, created by both of them.

31:04

So, that's really cool.

31:05

And it's kind of, like, accomplishing a goal I've had for a really long time.

31:09

So, it's, like, a huge milestone in my life, and I'm very proud of myself for

31:13

that.

31:13

So, they're called Pixar... or, Lego Pixar Brick Toons, is what it's

31:19

called.

31:19

It's on Disney+.

31:20

We're gonna do a little podcast watching one or two of them right now.

31:24

We both got our Disney Plus accounts from our wives.

31:28

Yes, we did.

31:29

We got our account info and learned what it was so that we wouldn't disappoint y

31:34

'all.

31:35

So, how long...

31:35

How long have you been working on this?

31:39

So, the last time that I was back visiting you...

31:42

Well, when we came back for your wedding, actually.

31:44

I was currently working on that stuff.

31:46

Okay.

31:46

Because you had your new laptop.

31:48

Yeah.

31:49

So, I was working for this production, and I worked on it from last year,

31:54

beginning of October, until this year, beginning of April.

31:57

So, about eight months.

31:58

About six months.

31:59

Seven months.

32:00

Anyway.

32:01

Okay.

32:01

Okay.

32:02

It might have been a little earlier than October.

32:05

It started last year.

32:06

But yeah, it was like seven, eight months of animation alone, working on it.

32:10

So, a lot.

32:11

Yeah, it was a long time.

32:14

So, yeah.

32:15

We put a lot of work into it, and it turned out really nice.

32:18

Although, being an animation supervisor, I still see things when I watch it where

32:22

I'm like, I wish I would have been able to adjust that still.

32:26

You are very critical.

32:29

Yeah, I'm hyper-focused on things that need to be fixed, because it's my job,

32:33

right?

32:34

I also think the more experience you've gotten, the more critical you've gotten of

32:39

animation.

32:40

A hundred percent.

32:41

In a good way.

32:43

Yeah, a hundred percent.

32:44

But I mean, it's cool.

32:45

I can point out a few to you after we're done watching the shorts.

32:51

And you can...

32:53

Is there a specific episode or a specific sequence that you would like us to watch?

33:01

So, there were two supervisors on the Pixar Shorts show.

33:05

Before it was called Brick Toons, it was called LPS, Lego Pixar Shorts,

33:09

because they weren't decided on a name yet.

33:12

Disney often does that with productions.

33:14

They won't tell the people working on it what it's actually going to be named until

33:17

it actually comes out, which is kind of funny.

33:19

But, yeah, so my...

33:21

The ones that I personally supervised the whole thing are...

33:25

There's an Incredibles one and there's a Finding Nemo one.

33:29

So I did both of those entirely.

33:31

I was supervising and animating on both of them the whole time.

33:34

And then there's a...

33:35

The Coco one that I also worked on quite extensively and I supervised for quite a

33:40

bit of the time because the other supervisor was away for about three

33:43

quarters of that episode.

33:45

Did you...

33:46

So when you say supervise, did you do the actual...

33:51

Like, I'm very ignorant.

33:53

Did you do the actual animating or did you supervise the animators?

33:59

I did both.

34:01

So I both animate on the show depending on what needs my attention.

34:06

And then I also supervise the animators as well.

34:10

So, and I basically review every single thing that comes in and I put back notes

34:17

and then they send it back again.

34:18

And it's just a lot of back and forth.

34:20

But yeah, it's definitely been an experience.

34:23

It's been interesting.

34:25

Or it was interesting working through all that stuff and working on all of it.

34:28

So I'm excited to show you.

34:30

And hopefully the listeners are loyal loyal fans who have stuck around through

34:36

Thick and Thin will enjoy going and watching some of these shorts and knowing

34:40

that someone they listen to in a podcast actually worked on them.

34:43

Your name is in the...

34:45

That's amazing to me.

34:47

So it's called Lego Pixar Brick Tunes.

34:51

Yes.

34:52

Which is very cool.

34:53

And the two that are like the main ones that I... I worked a little bit on all of

34:58

them, but the main ones that I worked on and had a lot of creative decision making

35:02

on.

35:04

Like Influence on are the Pizza Night, which is the third one, and Field Trip,

35:08

which is the fourth one.

35:09

Pizza Night is the Incredibles one, and Field Trip is the Finding Nemo one.

35:13

Well, I say that those are the ones that we watch.

35:15

100%.

35:16

I have not seen these.

35:18

I have some questions, though, because I'm curious.

35:20

Okay.

35:22

How does...

35:23

As an artist that you are, you're a very talented artist, but as an artist and an

35:29

animator, I know you've sort of explained to me like you're in your process when it

35:35

comes to like animating the look and feel of different characters.

35:41

Right.

35:42

But because these are Legos, how is that...

35:47

Like, what was different in your process?

35:49

How is that different to animating a person?

35:54

Or was it like... To be completely honest, it's not that different.

35:58

It's pretty similar like in the process that we animate them.

36:01

It's just in the...

36:03

In the critiquing process, like my personal job as a supervisor, like that is

36:08

a lot harder for me with Lego because I obviously... This was my first time ever

36:13

working on a Lego production.

36:14

So I had to like be really critical of like the Lego style and try to keep it in

36:19

that style for the whole time.

36:20

Did you watch other Lego things to see?

36:24

I did watch a little... Like I watched the Lego movie when I first started on these

36:29

so that I could get an idea.

36:30

One of the biggest challenges was finding Nemo.

36:33

Because I personally animated the cycles that were worked over top of for all of

36:41

the swimming for all the fish in that one.

36:43

And I did a lot of like the underwater looking animation and like taught people

36:47

how to do that properly.

36:49

So it looks like they're actually underwater.

36:51

So that was really interesting.

36:53

It was hard to do.

36:54

It was pretty hard to like wrap my head around and like work through.

36:57

But it ended up working out really well.

36:58

The short's really nice.

37:00

It looks like they're actually underwater in the short, which I'm pretty proud of.

37:03

Because I put a lot of time and work into like making it look like that and making

37:07

sure the animators knew how to.

37:08

But yeah, that's like the biggest thing.

37:11

The biggest difference is like trying to figure out the Lego style and like figure

37:14

out how these different shorts would work in the Lego style.

37:18

Also the mouths on the characters weren't actual mouths.

37:22

They're like sticker plates that we like animated separately and like had different

37:26

plates to switch between.

37:28

So that was kind of interesting.

37:29

It was almost like animating stop motion in a way.

37:32

So...

37:33

And then they just like superimpose that over the...

37:36

Yeah, so it was in Maya like visually for us as we animated.

37:40

But yeah, they almost like...

37:41

It's not like After Effects where they like composite it.

37:44

Right.

37:44

Like some of it is composited in the end.

37:48

But for the most part, it is just like kind of in the 3D animating program.

37:52

And we're like doing it on the fly while we're animating.

37:55

But yeah, it definitely was a weird experience because you don't have like an

37:58

open mouth to work with.

37:59

It's like a flat thing that you're kind of like changing and animating.

38:03

Why do they do it that way?

38:05

Because the Lego faces are stickers.

38:07

So they wanted it to look more like Legos.

38:09

So it's less like fluid.

38:11

Yeah, pretty much.

38:13

You'll notice when you watch it.

38:14

Actually, it looks really good in the end.

38:16

But yeah, it's definitely interesting to have that perspective on it.

38:19

But overall, it was very fun.

38:21

And I'm excited to show you.

38:22

Without further ado, why don't we start up the Pizza Night one.

38:27

The incredible one.

38:28

I'm ready.

38:29

Even the Pixar is Lego.

38:31

Yeah, so I actually supervised this.

38:33

To the animator that was working on this.

38:35

You did this?

38:36

I didn't animate this myself.

38:38

No, but I supervised it.

38:40

It was like giving notes and stuff and making sure it looked pretty close to the

38:44

actual Pixar logo.

38:45

Have you seen actual Incredibles, the movie?

38:47

I have not.

38:48

Oh, man.

38:49

So all of the voice actors are the same in this.

38:52

That were the voice actors on the actual movie.

38:55

Pizza Planet.

38:56

Yep.

38:57

I will say in Disney in Orlando, my favorite was Toy Story.

39:05

Yeah, the Toy Story Land is awesome.

39:07

It was the best.

39:09

So, Pizza Planet.

39:12

Isn't... aren't they also Incredibles?

39:14

Yeah, so all of the whole family has like superpowers.

39:17

And Jack Jack like just has random powers.

39:20

So that's like the what's funny about this.

39:21

He's sort of like amalgamates himself into the dough.

39:24

I animated a lot of shots on this series on this short myself, too.

39:28

I love the way they do that.

39:30

I mean, that's the vibe of the movie, too.

39:32

It's kind of like retro.

39:33

Yeah, fifties.

39:35

And the music is all like old style.

39:37

All the elements like they're not actual Legos, are they?

39:41

Yeah, everything in the short is Legos.

39:44

No, no, no.

39:45

Like, oh, like, you can't buy a Lego set of this.

39:48

Like, they're not actually.

39:50

They didn't like build it.

39:51

I animated this shot with him punching the dough, by the way.

39:56

It's crazy.

39:58

But yeah, the so that you didn't actually build it.

40:01

No.

40:01

No, they're like modeled in 3D and they just look like Legos.

40:04

Yeah, yeah.

40:05

We didn't build them from scratch with Legos or anything like that.

40:12

The dough on his face.

40:15

That just.

40:15

Yeah, it's good stuff, right?

40:17

It's pretty hilarious.

40:19

There's a fun thing that happened.

40:20

Well, I say it's fun.

40:22

It wasn't fun for me because there's a snow globe thing in this short that you'll

40:26

see coming up where they put Syndrome in like one of Violet's bubbles and shake him

40:31

around.

40:31

And I animated all that stuff.

40:33

And I'll tell you what happened with it when we get there.

40:35

But it's it's pretty just a typical animation studio like production thing

40:40

that happens sometimes.

40:47

So you can tell watching it to that their faces are like little stickers that we

40:51

sort of animated.

40:58

Like all those little pieces.

40:59

I bet that was a bitch.

41:01

Yeah, it's super was.

41:02

So him shaking around in the snow globe.

41:04

Like that.

41:05

Did you see all the sand in there?

41:06

Yeah.

41:06

So that's effects.

41:08

But I actually animated him bouncing around in that snow globe with all the

41:11

pieces and took me like three days to animate it and make it look good.

41:14

And then it got covered up by the sand effects completely.

41:17

You can't even see it.

41:25

It's adorable.

41:27

Yeah, I love that he's just been in the dough the whole time, like messing with

41:31

his dad.

41:32

Honestly, that would be the best thing about having super speed.

41:37

You can get pizza super fast.

41:43

Okay, what's your name?

41:45

It'll be coming up pretty soon here actually.

41:47

Oh, they put the stupid.

41:48

Oh, you can click on it and it'll play big again.

41:51

Okay.

41:52

Yeah.

41:52

So it'll be...

41:54

There's your name.

41:55

Yeah, right at the top man.

41:57

At the top.

41:58

I don't know who this Rob guy is, but they should just take his name out of

42:01

there.

42:01

He did nothing.

42:03

You're like, he's my best friend.

42:05

He's a really nice guy.

42:06

He did the best thing.

42:07

He did lots of work too.

42:08

Rob was awesome.

42:08

And a really good teammate.

42:09

But yeah.

42:10

So these are all the people that you worked with.

42:13

Yeah.

42:14

So I, my lead animators were all like really, really good.

42:18

They all did a really good job on the show.

42:19

And then they basically like, it's like a pecking order, right?

42:22

So like the leads like do a lot of technical animating and like they handle

42:26

stuff that I delegate to them.

42:28

But then like, I always like review all of the work by everyone throughout the show.

42:32

So, but the other animators obviously are all, some of them are seniors and some of

42:36

them are at different levels in their own ways, but they all, they all do their

42:40

part.

42:40

And then like it all comes together and becomes one show, you know?

42:44

So.

42:44

That is very, that is so cool.

42:47

Yeah.

42:47

But yeah, this is a, this is my name in a Pixar and Lego production on Disney Plus.

42:53

I am very proud of you.

42:54

Thanks buddy.

42:55

Yeah.

42:56

I'm proud of me too.

42:57

This is a big like bucket list accomplishment for you.

43:00

Yeah.

43:00

That's very cool.

43:01

Very, very cool.

43:02

And soon I will...

43:04

They should like...

43:06

Play these in Times Square or something.

43:08

In Times Square.

43:09

It's amazing.

43:10

All right.

43:11

Are we watching the Finding Nemo one?

43:13

Yeah.

43:13

I don't see why not.

43:14

If you want to watch it, we can do that.

43:15

Sure.

43:16

Are the faces in this one the same as the other one?

43:19

Yeah.

43:19

So these are the, the eyes are, um, are built into the rigs and then the

43:24

mouths are stickers.

43:26

Stickers.

43:27

They're not actually stickers.

43:28

It's just the easiest way for me to describe sort of what happened while we

43:30

were animating it.

43:31

Like, so yeah, you'll see like the fish sort of floating up and down.

43:35

And like all these like idle animations on their fins and stuff in this one.

43:39

And all of that is me.

43:40

Like I did all that animation on the idle animation for the fish.

43:44

So, and then obviously the animators adjusted it accordingly, according like

43:48

for each shot and like animated on top of it.

43:50

But them actually like floating and looking like they're swimming is probably

43:54

about 90% my animation.

43:57

Is that actually Ellen?

43:59

Or did they get someone else?

44:01

It's not Ellen because there was some stuff going on with Ellen DeGeneres during

44:05

this.

44:05

Okay.

44:05

But Marlin is Marlin, right?

44:08

Yeah.

44:08

So Marlin's Marlin.

44:09

Mr. Ray is the same actor.

44:12

The person that plays Nemo's voice is the same.

44:16

So is the idea, do you think?

44:19

I mean, I know you don't know, but like, are they going to do more

44:22

feature length Lego, like reboots?

44:26

I hope they do more shorts.

44:28

I think that would be fun.

44:30

I don't think they'll do Lego full length stuff.

44:33

Cause they did Lego Star Wars.

44:35

Yeah.

44:35

Did they?

44:36

Yeah.

44:36

That was actually our studio as well.

44:38

That did the Lego Star Wars shorts that came out recently.

44:41

And the Lego movie.

44:42

The Lego movie was not our studio, but yeah, they did do the Lego movie.

44:46

It would be cool if they did like a full length movie, but I don't know if they

44:49

would do that.

44:50

I just can't like, they look like Lego.

44:54

Yeah.

44:54

And I mean, they are Lego.

44:56

Like, I'm sure you could put that together if you wanted to.

44:59

My biggest hope, honestly, Brandon, is that they make real Lego sets for these

45:03

shorts, because I would buy every single one of them.

45:05

I would love having all five of them and just like put them in my office.

45:08

Did I show you the one we, my dad, we got my dad the Mustang?

45:12

Oh yeah.

45:13

Those are really cool.

45:13

The car ones.

45:14

Cause you could open the doors and everything.

45:16

For Christmas, Michelle got me a retro computer.

45:19

I don't know if I showed it to you.

45:21

I don't think so.

45:22

I haven't been there since before Christmas.

45:24

That's true.

45:24

I made it on Boxing Day.

45:26

It took me like seven hours.

45:30

Holy crap.

45:32

That's awesome.

45:33

Yeah.

45:34

It was so much fun.

45:35

It's like a whole little monitor and a keyboard and a mouse.

45:39

Did you put it in the, in your office?

45:42

Yeah.

45:42

On one of the speakers.

45:43

I'm looking at it right now.

45:46

That's awesome.

45:47

It even has like, the screen looks like Windows 95.

45:51

Yeah.

45:52

So when we have to animate all these like Lego bricks falling too, it's such a pain

45:55

in the ass, but it's worth it cause it looks cool after it's done.

46:01

Are you laughing about the assembly guide?

46:03

Yeah.

46:03

It's like amazing.

46:04

Yeah.

46:05

It's really cool.

46:05

They do like a whole building the ship boat again thing with it.

46:08

Was that a bitch?

46:10

Not really.

46:11

I mean...

46:12

How do you, so how do you know what order, like, is that already done for you?

46:16

What do you mean?

46:17

What order the shots go in?

46:19

Like, yeah.

46:20

Like which bricks?

46:21

Well, I mean, we, we have to like bring the stuff into the scenes and like place

46:25

it where we need it and stuff.

46:27

There was actually a huge pain in the ass with the, um, with the, this whole set

46:31

because, well, it's all built together now, but like with the broken ship set,

46:35

there was like a lot of issues with it because there was like set dress

46:38

everywhere that like needed to go in certain places and it kept like moving

46:42

around and we couldn't figure out why.

46:44

So, but a lot of that's done in layout or like the previous departments.

46:47

And then we just adjusted accordingly to like how we needed an animation.

46:51

And then you just like, like the assets are already done.

46:54

Yeah.

46:55

So that's like separate departments.

46:56

Okay.

46:56

So like modeling models them and then rigging, we'll put a skeleton in it so

47:00

that we're able to animate it.

47:01

Um, and then like compositing and stuff does all the eyes and like all the,

47:05

all the look of everything like complete when it's done.

47:08

But I like how they like don't want to dress her clear short-term memory loss.

47:17

Yeah.

47:17

They kind of ignore it for most of it.

47:19

It's pretty funny, but yeah, it is wild though.

47:22

Like I remember when I was 13 and, um, Nemo came out like the actual movie

47:27

and it was like, it's, it's to this day, it's still one of my favorite Pixar

47:30

movies.

47:30

And then I get to work on something like this, which is like all the same

47:33

characters and the same world, you know, but just with Lego.

47:37

I froze it on your name again.

47:39

Cause it's so cool.

47:40

I do it every time.

47:41

Every time I watch these or show people, I always pause it on my name.

47:44

It's awesome.

47:46

So you could put like a screenshot of this if you want in the cliff notes for the

47:51

podcast too.

47:52

Oh, I'm making a screenshot right now.

47:54

Yeah.

47:54

Yep.

47:55

It's right there up at the top though.

47:57

Son of a...

47:57

Oh, go back.

47:59

But yeah, that's the two ones that I like had the most influence on.

48:02

That is amazing.

48:05

It's pretty cool.

48:06

Right?

48:06

So yeah.

48:07

Hopefully, um, all of our loyal fans, you guys will go and take a look at these.

48:12

They're, they're 10 minutes each and they're, they're, they're pretty great.

48:15

They're heartwarming and very funny.

48:19

And I have to say the animation is top shelf.

48:23

Well, thank you, sir.

48:25

Thank you very much.

48:26

For, for what it's worth.

48:28

I know I'm not, uh, I feel like you have a bit of a creative eye for that kind of

48:32

stuff anyway, but, um, yeah, that's that.

48:35

They're pretty cool.

48:37

Um, we're probably going to do a little bit of, of some different stuff with our

48:40

podcast in the future.

48:41

So stay tuned.

48:43

We're excited about it.

48:44

We are reorganizing.

48:46

Yes.

48:46

That's the best way to put it.

48:48

So, um, but yeah, it's always fun and we're going to probably try and get some

48:52

more of this in now that Brendan's done his honeymoon and he's done dead getting

48:56

married and being an adult and all that good stuff.

48:59

So I still got to go on my honeymoon at some point too, if Steph and I haven't

49:02

decided when we're going to do that, but Where are you going?

49:05

We want to go to Greece.

49:07

Oh, I went there.

49:08

Yeah.

49:09

But I mean, I might try and convince Steph to go on a Disney cruise.

49:11

Cause it sounds like it'd be really good.

49:13

We did a Virgin cruise.

49:15

It was, it was very, very good.

49:17

No kids.

49:20

Um, what else?

49:21

The food was incredible.

49:23

They had all these restaurants.

49:24

And so every night for dinner, you pick where you want to go.

49:28

Yeah.

49:29

That's really cool.

49:30

Yeah.

49:30

I'm going to look into it and see if I can like book something and then be like,

49:34

Hey, Steph, guess what?

49:34

You're going on a cruise.

49:37

I don't know how her like seasick, like if she'd be seasick though,

49:40

cause she's got the stomach issues.

49:41

So it might be something that we need to like talk about and see if it's okay,

49:45

but still it would be really fun.

49:47

I think it would be really cool to go on a Disney cruise, especially now that I can

49:50

tell people I animated on it on like Disney productions and stuff, you know,

49:54

and not just be like making shit up.

49:56

That would be very cool.

49:58

Yeah.

49:58

That would be really cool.

49:59

But, um, I'm glad we were able to jump on tonight, buddy.

50:01

For sure.

50:02

Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

50:03

Oh no.

50:04

This has been another refined...

50:07

Nineties.

50:08

...Quick Hits.

50:09

Pixar Quick Hits.

50:10

Pixar Quick Hits.
